Here’s an old trick for running on slick, wintery roads. Take some short hex head sheet metal screws:
and screw them into the soles of an old pair of running shoes:
Voila! Traction! For only pennies! Warning: Do NOT attempt this with Nike Air soles.
Ray–you say it’s an old trick, and I’ve known of it for years….but I’ve only come across a few runners who have heard of it (and never found one who used it! 🙂

P.S. It’s worth noting that the screws should be SHORT. (“Just any sheet metal screw” might get someone in trouble, if they use screws that are long enough to protrude through the sole.) But of course your photo makes it clear that 3/8″ screws are a good choice.
