The first running shoes I bought for myself for high school track were a pair of white leather Nike Cortez.
The “sponge” midsole broke down quickly. I wore them everywhere, which didn’t help their durability.
I scuffed entirely through the toe-cap while climbing on the concrete roof of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium during a field trip.
That led me to my first attempts at using Shoe-goo, a story for another day.
What were your first running shoes?
My first were Brooks Villanovas bought in Marathon Sports, Cambridge in 1976.
I didn’t start running until I was 38 in the late 90s. My first shoes were a pair of ASICS GT-2000.
I bought them at Runners Edge in Melrose, now Marathon Sports. They were good but the toe box turned out to be too small and I lost 3 or 4 toe nails after my first marathon.
I ran two marathons and a half marathon in those shoes. Now they are in my closet and still look pretty good.
